On the hills above Merthyr Tydfil, Miller Argent is undertaking a highly ambitious land reclamation scheme that is also involving the extraction of coal by opencast methods. Known as the 'Ffos-y-fran Land Reclamation Scheme', this is the third and final phase of the East Merthyr Reclamation Scheme which is expected to run for another 17 years. The reclamation works will include the removal of known shafts and adits all previously associated with iron ore and coal workings that present a danger to humans, livestock and wild animals.

Southern Water has recently installed eight new Partech Turbi-Tech 2000LA systems at its East Worthing water treatment works for measuring Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids (MLSS) in the aeration tanks.

Southern Water has been using Partech?s Turbi-Tech 2000LA at a number of wastewater treatment works for several years. Based on the successful performance of these, the company has taken a decision to replace monitors that have proved to be problematical and replace them with the Turbi-Tech 2000LA as part of its Process Compliance Programme.

Over the past 18 months, the Environment Agency has been rolling out a number of changes relating to environmental legislation. For many sectors of industry, the one change that will not have gone unnoticed has been replacement of the Integrated Pollution Prevention & Control (IPPC) directive by the Environmental Permitting Regulations (EPR). As a result of this change, those companies holding an IPPC permit must now comply with EPR. In simple terms EPR requires companies to operate best practice to assess the risks that emissions pose to the environment. Having done that, companies must ensure that a suitable level of monitoring is carried out and which is proportional to the complexity of the operations of the installation and the perceived environmental risks.
